Leadership is an inevitable part of human existence. It is of utmost importance in every sphere of life, be it family, business, sports, or any other field. Globally 100s of leaders have impacted my life and influenced me to be better and understand leadership from all angles.
And in this post, I want to share about one of those leaders whom I have watched playing cricket for almost 15 years and win every major ICC trophy for his country. Yes, you have guessed it right. I am talking about Mr Captian Cool – MS Dhoni.
I can share numerous qualities of his leadership and character as a captain and a cricketer but I want to highlight one unique trait which I observed watching a cricket match.
It was the final of Cricket’s Champions Trophy in England in 2013. England needed 19 of 12 balls, good proper batsmen were batting, and it seems England would win easily. But, it was this gutsy, out of a no-where decision of Captain M.S. Dhoni making spinners to bowl the last two overs when fast bowlers had some overs left. Mostly, other captains would have dismissed this idea but not Dhoni. He is the leader who always believes in investing in the people who could have been disregarded by others in some testing and crucial times. This Leadership style is needed in today’s time starting with the lowest level of management.
You can find this leadership instinct in the Movie Lagaan as well when Bhuvan (Amir Khan) found his mystery leg spinner in Kachra (Aditya Lakhia) during a practice session. But Bhuvan cannot take him in the team because Kachra belongs to the lower caste and the other players had dismissed the idea of playing with him, it took Bhuvan some inspiring words and some reality check to make the entire village understand the significance of Kachra in the team and also of equality among all human beings. If it wouldn’t be Bhuvan, others would have disregarded Kachra.
A leader’s role is to find the potential talent and give them chance if they think that it is the right time and situation for them to perform. They take these gutsy decisions out of nowhere because of something called leadership instinct which works in that very moment.
I request all of you to understand the situation and invest in that talent that may be disregarded by other leaders – but you invest in them and unlock their full potential and help your team win.
